Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 101 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start those conversations BEFORE we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing/reading on a weekly basis in an informal forum.

Paintings From Class

In class we were trying to interpret what message each painting was giving to each of us. That exercise helped me to fully understand paintings that having a certain meaning towards it, instead of just thinking "oh that's a nice picture". This will definitely help me when I go to the metropolitan museum for an assignment for my other class.

  1. I agree that the paintings have a deeper meaning than what they appear.I feel like they really have to do with the emotions of the artist. Like Stary Night, it really showed how the artist was upset and devastated because the art involved a lot of dark colors and a strangle creepy mountain in the mid center of the art. I found that the mountain was significant because it just stuck out as a sore thumb, it really didn't flow with everything else in the art. Once we discussed that the artist was going through a sad time because of political issues, it really made sense why he really wanted to incorporate these dark colors to show dark upset emotions.

  2. I agree with you both, the paintings were inspiring. I some how felt connected to the artist in the 1st painting (Claude Monet) because I am really into nature; it often has an astonishing view, tells the setting and sometimes help the Pathos understand the painter and how he/she feels, a painting can be described using figurative language so that we can have a better idea as of what it means.
