Brassai and Miller

Check out photos by the Hungarian-born photographer, Brassai, who appears as a character in Henry & June:

Do you recognize any of these photos from the film? What is the purpose of recreating these still images for a film which is composed of moving images?

Also, how does Henry & June capture the voice of Henry Miller, the writer, the person we've been spending the last few weeks with in The Colossus of Maroussi? How does Fred Ward's depiction of Miller live up to or contradict your idea of Miller the author?

  1. I actually don't recognize any of these specific images from the movie but they do remind me of scenes from the movie such as the dark sidewalks and the sexuallisation of women. As for how Fred Ward portrays Miller, in the book he was not portrayed as the womenizer and having a strong sexual desire as in the movie and he seems more reserved in the movie.

  2. I recognize a bunch of the photos from the film. Especially the one of the older woman with the excessive amount of jewelry on.
Fred Ward's depiction of Henry Miller is not at all what my idea of Henry is in the book. He doesn't seem like such a womanizer and sex fiend in the book.
